BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Library presents a powerful and significant opportunity to learn about the Civil Rights Movement, particularly the march over the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma, Alabama, through the new exhibit, Selma Is Now - the Photography of Spider Martin, on display from January 31 until June 27, 2026 at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311, 954-357-6282.

Drawn from the Spider Martin Photographic Archive at the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas, these newly restored images invite reflection on the courageous Selma marches and their lasting impact on American democracy.

The exhibition will open with a live event, Cultural Conversation "Selma: Legacy, Lens, and Liberation,  from 3:30 to 5PM featuring entrepreneur, art advocate and founder of FATVillage,  Doug McCraw, and award-winning equity strategist and activist Chevara Orrin, daughter of activist James Bevel. Together they explore the enduring impact of photojournalist James "Spider" Martin's iconic photographs of the 1965 marches and confrontations which led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, dramatically expanding the ability of Black Americans to participate in political life.

The exhibition and opening program are presented in partnership between AARLCC and the Broward County Cultural Division. Attendance is free; exhibit registration  and Cultural Conversation event registration (done separately) are requested.
