BROWARD
COUNTY, FL - Property
owners in Broward County will see some tax relief in Fiscal Year 2026 as the
Broward Commission approves a $1.7 billion property tax budget with a modest
reduction in the County's millage rate. The new millage is set at 5.6658 mills.
The County's total budget, including non-property tax supported agencies like
the airport, seaport, utilities, capital, and reserves is $8.8 billion.
Developing
the FY26 budget was particularly challenging in light of the loss of $80
million in funding to the newly elected Tax Collector's Office as well as
funding all of the county-wide constitutional offices. To help offset that
impact, the Broward Commission reduced 159 funded positions and nearly $20
million in recurring operating costs for General Fund agencies.
Public
safety remained a top priority of the Broward Commission, evidenced by the $24.2
million (3%) increase to the Broward Sheriff's Office regional budget and 911
services, this increase includes the second-year $8 million salary adjustment
for BSO Detention Deputies, and represents the largest operating appropriation
to public safety in the county's history.
Even while
restraining spending in other areas and increasing public safety funding, the
County strengthened its financial reserves by including increases in reserves
for emergency and cash flow as well as emergency preparedness and shelters, to
prudently prepare for unforeseen emergencies.
Broward
County enters FY26 in a strong financial position, having paid off all General
Obligation debt. Broward County also maintains a "AAA" credit rating with all
three major credit rating agencies, a distinction held by less than 2% of the
over 3,200 counties nationwide.
The FY26
budget ensures Broward County can continue to provide a broad range of vital
public services, including Transportation, Human Services, Environmental
Protection, Elderly and Veterans Services, Emergency Operations, Water and
Wastewater Services, Animal Care and Adoption, Parks and Recreation, and Libraries,
while preparing for the future.
