BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Starting Tuesday, September 16, Public Works' Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division (HBMD) will begin scour protection projects on the County's three movable bridges over the New River in Fort Lauderdale: SW 4th Avenue Bridge, SE 3rd Avenue Bridge, and Andrews Avenue Bridge (see attached map).
The work includes installation of materials that will stabilize the riverbed and protect the bridge foundations from further erosion. The project will also address scour-critical conditions identified in recent Florida Department of Transportation bridge inspection reports. Ultimately, this work will support and safeguard the bridge foundations.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by September 2026, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen conditions. During construction, one lane on the streets beneath the bridge approaches, on both sides of the river, will be closed. Flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone. Boat traffic is expected to be minimally impacted.
HBMD has coordinated extensively with essential federal, state, and local agencies to ensure all regulatory and environmental requirements are met.
These projects are partially funded by a $3 million grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Resilient Florida Program, with matching funds from Broward County.
The Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division can be reached at (954) 357-6040. Project Manager John Low can be reached at 954-579-2459 or jlow@broward.org.
Broward County appreciates your patience as we complete this necessary bridge work.
