BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The Public Works' Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division, in partnership with Florida Power and Light (FPL), will replace existing street lighting with an entirely new system in the
Franklin Park Neighborhood, within the Broward Municipal Services District
(see attached map). This transportation surtax-funded project aims to provide
adequate illumination for sidewalks and roads. FPL will construct and maintain the new lighting system.
The first phase of
this project, which included sidewalk improvements, installing ADA-accessible
pedestrian curb ramps and swale improvements, was completed in November 2024.
This second phase is expected to start Wednesday, February 5, 2025, and be completed
in July 2025, barring any unforeseen conditions or weather delays. A subsequent
phase of this project will focus on removing the existing wooden light posts.
Construction will begin with the installation of new
concrete light poles with LED luminaires within the county
right-of-way and will comply with all Florida Department of Transportation and County lighting
illumination standards. Vehicular traffic detours will be supported by a traffic officer to
minimize disruption during off-peak traffic hours. In addition, access to some sidewalks will be affected and pedestrian traffic will be directed to use sidewalks across from the work
zone.
"Improved lighting in Franklin Park makes the neighborhood safer for pedestrians and drivers. Concrete poles can better withstand severe weather. These latest improvements compliment the work that has been completed to make this area more accessible for everyone in the community," said District 8 Commissioner Robert McKinzie, whose district includes the Franklin Park neighborhood.
County staff coordinated this project closely with the
Franklin Park Homeowners Association and presented it to the community and members of the board.
