BROWARD COUNTY - The Bienes Museum of the Modern Book will exhibit Rare Adventures, a collection of late 19th- and 20th-century travel books, photos, objects and art, from January 10 to May 19, 2025, during open hours at Main Library, 100 S Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.
Go back in time with treasured material from the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book and the Special Collections of the African American Research Library and Cultural Center. The exhibit offers an opportunity to compare the shared experience of tourism and discovery, past and present.
For late 19th and early 20th century travelers, published journals, geographic anthologies and artists' renderings were the only opportunity to view the world or follow new exploration.
Rare Adventures is on display at the Main Library in the 2nd floor exhibit area and in the Bienes Museum on the 6th floor. Visitors can see antique volumes about travel, guidebooks and illustrations from a previous century that reprise the experience of discovering far-away places in these formats.
For a hands-on, interactive experience, visitors can sample bygone technology by looking at a vintage photograph through a stereoscope, the 3-D, 'virtual reality' device of its era
