BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County proudly announces its membership in the Climate Mayors network, a coalition of leading cities committed to exchanging innovative ideas and best practices to address the climate crisis. By joining this influential group, Broward County is continuing its pathway toward advancing sustainable, equitable, and resilient communities both locally and nationwide.
"Solving our greatest threat - climate change - involves all of us, at every level of our community," said Mayor Beam Furr. "That's why I am delighted to announce that Broward County has joined the Climate Mayors network to ensure we're bringing feasible solutions to tackle the most complex challenges facing our community today. I look forward to working with my fellow Mayors and learning from some of the nation's leading cities, where we can create scalable and impactful initiatives that safeguard our communities and ecosystems for generations to come."
Founded in 2014, Climate Mayors is a bipartisan network representing 46 states and nearly 60 million Americans. Members demonstrate climate leadership through local action while also building political will for federal and global climate progress. Climate Mayors have collectively championed commitments to the Paris Agreement and advocated for a green and equitable economic recovery.
Joining this influential network reinforces Broward County's commitment to implementing tangible solutions to protect vulnerable communities, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and adapt to increasing environmental risks.
With a population of nearly two million, Broward County is the second-largest County in Florida and a recognized leader in climate resilience and sustainability. The County has integrated sea level rise and flood risk into land use and infrastructure planning, mapped areas of social vulnerability, and developed a County-wide Resilience Plan to address flooding and extreme heat with a focus on equity and economic co-benefits. As a low-lying coastal region, Broward faces significant climate vulnerabilities, including rising seas, storm surge, and extreme heat, making its commitment to innovative, collaborative solutions all the more critical. Joining the Climate Mayors network further solidifies the County's leadership in addressing the climate crisis and driving innovation in the face of unprecedented challenges.
