BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Enjoy an amazing evening of electrifying stories and authentic Japanese drumming at Broward County Library's Moonlight Tales annual song-and-story cabaret, scheduled for Friday, February 7, 2025, from 6 to 8PM at the Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club in Stranahan Park, located next to Broward County Main Library, 100 S Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale.
This year's Moonlight Tales, held in conjunction with the library's NEA Big Read title, To Live by Chinese-born author Yu Hua, celebrates the culture and heritage of Asian Americans. The NEA Big Read is a communitywide reading project that encourages everyone to read the same book and attend events for all ages centering around the themes, subjects and locations of To Live, including Moonlight Tales and BCL's signature festival, ArtLit 2025, held Saturday, February 8, 2025 at North Regional/Broward College Library.
Monica Shang, director of South Florida's Chinese Performing Arts Group, will emcee the event, which will include the following performers:
- Motoko: The recipient of the National Storytelling Network's 2017 Circle of Excellence Award, Motoko has enchanted audiences of every age since 1993 with her repertoire of Asian folktales, ghost stories, mime vignettes and childhood memories.
- Dr. Joel Ying: Eclectic folktales and his unique personal experiences as a physician bridge the traditional and the modern in Ying's unique storytelling.
- Fushu Daiko: This Florida-based taiko drumming ensemble performs both classic and modern compositions that honor and showcase the sounds of traditional Japanese percussion.
"Moonlight Tales is more than just an event; it's a chance for our community to come together and share in a unique cultural experience," says Broward County Library Director Allison Grubb. "We invite everyone to join us for an unforgettable evening of storytelling and music."
Complimentary refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Friends of Fort Lauderdale Libraries. Admission is free, but registration is requested.
