BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Transit (BCT) proudly
hosted a Juneteenth celebration at the Lauderhill Transit Center on
Wednesday, June 19, 2024. The event featured a bus transformed into a moving
museum wrapped in vibrant Juneteenth imagery, attracting close to one hundred
community members who came to honor and learn about the significance of June 19 in
American history.
The Juneteenth bus served as
the centerpiece of the celebration, offering an immersive experience that
transported attendees through the day's rich history. Visitors stepped
inside to explore the story of emancipation and the enduring spirit of freedom
and resilience that Juneteenth represents.
BCT CEO/General Manager Coree
Cuff Lonergan expressed her gratitude for the community's participation. "Seeing our community come together to honor Juneteenth was truly moving.
This day is a powerful reminder of our history and the ongoing journey toward equality and justice. We are proud to have created a space where people could
learn, reflect, and celebrate together."
Event attendees had a variety of
activities to participate in, all while enjoying a Juneteenth-inspired music playlist. Many children crafted Juneteenth-themed keychains
and enjoyed coloring sheets illustrating important holiday symbols like the
Sankofa bird. The interactive Threads exploration allowed attendees to engage with digital
maps showcasing cultural landmarks throughout the County, adding an educational layer to the
celebration.
BCT's commitment to celebrating
diversity and educating passengers and the community about important historical
events was evident throughout the day. The event drew participants of all ages, fostering a sense of unity and awareness, and highlighted the importance of
continued efforts toward a more inclusive and equitable society.
