BROWARD
COUNTY, FL- Commissioners are taking significant steps to address the
affordable housing crisis head-on. Recognizing the urgent need for affordable
housing options, the County Commissioners have approved $12.9 million in gap
financing to fund the development of 340 new affordable homes.
The new
developments are located in Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Lauderhill.
- Sistrunk
Apartments: $3.9 million has been allocated to build seventy-two affordable
homes in Fort Lauderdale. This development aims to provide much-needed housing
options for low- and moderate-income individuals and families in the area.
- Residences at
Sunset Plaza: Lauderhill will receive $7 million in gap financing to construct
144 affordable homes. This project will contribute significantly to expanding
affordable housing opportunities in the community.
- Federation
Plaza: $2 million in gap financing to develop 124 affordable homes in Hollywood. This funding will support the creation of housing units that cater
to the needs of residents with limited means.
"We are on a
roll here. It is amazing the progress that
we are making with the limited land we have available to us," said Vice Mayor Nan Rich, who
has a long-time notable record for championing affordable housing throughout
her career in the Florida Senate and as a County Commissioner.
Commissioners
also approved a "local match" of $100,000 for University Station. A local match
is required in order to become eligible for matching Florida State housing
funds. University Station will provide two hundred affordable housing units in
Hollywood.
"This is the first
development to offer public parking where the Hollywood commuter train station
will be. This is a big moment to get this done," said Commissioner Beam Furr.
In addition to
the approved developments, Broward County remains committed to its long-term
goal of enhancing affordable housing options. Over $100 million has been
allocated to twenty-seven projects since 2018, resulting in the creation of
over 2,500 affordable homes. Each of these projects is subject to a minimum of
30 years and up to 50 years of maintaining affordable housing.
This year the
County approved a study by the Florida International University Metropolitan
Center to develop a comprehensive Ten-Year Affordable Housing Master Plan. This
plan, expected to be presented to the Commission in October, will provide a
roadmap for tackling the affordable housing crisis effectively.
