BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The Broward County Commission on the Status of Women celebrates National Women's History Month by honoring 12 life-changing leaders. The honorees below exemplify this year's national observance as "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories." They will be featured throughout March in an exhibit in the lobby of the Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. It can also be viewed on the 2023 Women's History Month website. - Jennifer Andreu - A transformational leader with over 25 years of experience and accomplishments in public and private education. Jennifer serves as a Plantation City Council Member and is committed to expanding opportunities for underutilized businesses that embrace diversity.
- Melinda Blostein - Serves as the Broward County Chief Assistant Public Defender for the Specialty Courts Division, including the Mental Health Division, Drug Court and Veterans Treatment Intervention Court. Melinda volunteers with local charities to assist those individuals dealing with food insecurity.
- Lauren Book - Founded Lauren's Kids, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing childhood sexual abuse. As a Florida State Senator, Lauren supports new mothers, infants and working families and dedicates her life to being a voice for those who have not yet found theirs.
- Asha Devi - West Indian/American actress, activist and educator who attended high school in Broward County. She brings awareness to human trafficking, mental health and domestic violence. In her most recent film, Rising Lotus, Asha plays the role of an abused wife.
- Sheryl A. Dickey - Project manager and public relations consultant who operates her business in a LEED® certified building in the Midtown Commerce Center in Fort Lauderdale. Sheryl helps spur other developments on the Sistrunk corridor.
- Siolys González - As the Executive Center Director at Chen Senior Medical Center in Pembroke Pines, Siolys serves thousands of community members at their primary care clinic. She is committed to building teams that create dignity and honor the lives of seniors through compassionate care.
- Christine Hunschofsky - The Florida State Representative passed bipartisan legislation by renaming a Coral Reef Conservation Area and establishing a Commission on Mental Health and Substance abuse. As a Mayor of Parkland, Christine led the city through the aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018.
- Niki Lopez - An Afro-Latina, Queer interdisciplinary visual artist, curator, activist and graphic designer who focuses on LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. Niki is the co-founder of a movement that uses the arts to create a safe space to address the unspoken.
- Glenna Milberg - Emmy award-winning journalist who hosts "This Week in South Florida," Local 10's most-watched public affairs broadcast. Glenna was named "South Florida's Best TV Reporter" by The Miami New Times and a "Woman Worth Knowing" by the Miami Beach Commission on the Status of Women.
- Mala Rampertaap - First Indian woman to own a modeling agency in the US, teaching women about equality, protecting themselves and living an empowered life. Mala provides counseling to teenagers and other victims of abuse.
- Barbara Tarnove - Helped establish and leads the Tamarac Historical Society. Their mission is to research, collect, preserve and exhibit the city's history. She documented the city's beginnings and other stories in her book Images of America Tamarac.
- Marie Woodson - The first Haitian American member in Broward County elected to the Florida State Legislature. Marie focuses on social and senior services, domestic violence and human trafficking, and dedicating her life to aiding the underprivileged to attain self-sufficiency.
The Board of County Commissioners will present a proclamation recognizing National Women's History Month on Tuesday, March 14, at 10AM during the County Commission meeting at the Broward County Governmental Center.
