BROWARD COUNTY, FL - County Mayor Michael Udine hosted a
bond-signing ceremony on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, to finalize the funding
needed to complete construction of the highly anticipated Broward County
Convention Center Headquarters Hotel.
The Hotel's First Tier Revenue Bonds, Series 2022 are being
issued with an approximate par value of $389.5 million to fund the remaining
construction and furnishings for the hotel. The Mayor previously signed tourist
development tax revenue bonds in December for the final phase of the Convention
Center construction. Putting these signatures to paper signifies the County is
ready to accommodate future needs of the travel industry in Greater Fort
Lauderdale.
"Having a headquarters hotel along with the expanded
convention center means we'll be able to bring in very large group meetings and
more city-wide events with far more positive economic impact," said Stacy
Ritter, president and CEO of Visit Lauderdale. "We also expect to host
many visitors seeking upscale hotel stays before and after their cruises from
Port Everglades with easy access to all the Greater Fort Lauderdale area has to
offer."
The hotel will be operated by Omni Hotels Management
Corporation with 29-stories and 800 rooms to serve as the anchor headquarters hotel. There will also be an additional
73,000 square feet of meeting space with direct connectivity to the Convention Center.
Constructed on approximately 5.4 acres of land, about two
miles from Greater Fort Lauderdale's beaches, the hotel will be conveniently
located between Broward's Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International
Airport, making it easy for tourists, cruise guests and business travelers to
come and go.
"After years of planning and unavoidable pandemic
delays, we're excited to begin this project, bolstering our economy by more
than $200 million annually and offering more than 1,300 jobs," said County
Administrator Monica Cepero.
"This is a landmark day as we build a world-class hotel
and expanded convention center. We'd like to thank the many government,
industry and community leaders who have worked diligently to make this entire
project a reality," said Broward County Mayor Michael Udine. "The
hotel symbolizes our commitment to provide accommodations that make Greater
Fort Lauderdale one of America's top tourist and convention destinations."
The hotel is expected to be completed in the fall of 2025.
