BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Two new Commissioners will
attend their first Broward County Commission meeting on Tuesday, January 25,
2022, beginning at 10AM.
Jared
Moskowitz represents Broward District 8, which includes parts of Coconut
Creek, Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, Margate, North
Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Plantation, Pompano Beach, Tamarac, Wilton Manors,
and the Central County region of the Broward Municipal Service District.
Moskowitz is the former Director of the Florida
Division of Emergency Management and led emergency operations throughout the
State during the COVID-19 Pandemic. He served
six years in the Florida House of Representatives and six years on the Parkland
City Commission. Previously, he was
General Counsel at AshBritt. He earned
his bachelor's degree in political science from George Washington University
and his Juris Doctorate from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law
Center.
Torey
Alston joins the Commission on Tuesday, representing Broward District
9. District 9 includes parts of Fort
Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, Oakland Park, Plantation, Sunrise, and
part of the Broward Municipal Service District near the Florida turnpike.
Alston previously served as Chief of Staff for the
Florida Department of Transportation, helping to manage a $10.3 billion
enterprise with more than 6,200 employees. He's the only County Commissioner that
has, in the past, worked as Chief of Staff for two Broward Commissioners and
held senior positions in Miami Dade County Public Schools, the city of
Gainesville and the Florida Department of Management Services.
Alston also served on the Florida Agricultural and
Mechanical University (FAMU) Board of Trustees, City of Fort Lauderdale Audit
Advisory Committee and City of Oakland Park Board of Adjustment. Alston is a
Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, FAMU National Alumni Association and
NAACP. He earned his bachelor's degree and Master of Business Administration
from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University where he served five years
on the Board of Trustees. ?He is the only African American currently serving as
a County Commissioner.
Both Commissioners were appointed by Florida Governor Ron
DeSantis to fill vacancies left by former Commissioners who, by law, resigned
in order to run for a U.S. Congressional seat.
