Broward County Transit Showcases New Electric Buses

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Transit (BCT) is offering the public a sneak peek at two of BCT’s new electric buses. The buses will be on display at Broward County’s Governmental Center on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, from 8AM to 1PM. The Governmental Center is located at 115 S. Andrews Avenue in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The buses will be stationed on the west side of the building, on SW 1st Avenue between Broward Boulevard and SW 2nd Street.

After testing several other electric buses, BCT selected Proterra’s 40-foot ZX5 battery-electric bus with 675-kilowatt hours of battery storage. It is equipped with the DuoPower™ drivetrain, which has two electric motors and is designed to allow the bus to travel more than 300 miles on one charge. The vehicle is also equipped with overhead charge rails for on-route charging.

The bus, designed and manufactured in the United States, also offers zero tailpipe emissions and lower operating costs with fewer parts than combustion engine vehicles. In addition to providing a smoother, quieter ride, the bus also features an exterior pedestrian alert system, security cameras, onboard public information monitors, and free Wi-Fi.

“BCT is introducing technologically advanced buses that are not only safe and comfortable for our riders but also environmentally friendly and economical. We have ordered 12 new electric buses that will be in service in the fall. This begins BCT’s transition to an all-electric bus fleet.” said Chris Walton, Broward County’s Director of Transportation.

The bus demo at the Governmental Center is open to the public, which is invited to hop on board and learn about the many features the electric bus has to offer. Face masks and social distancing are required on the buses.
