Dr. Rebecca MacDougall Named County's Chief Medical Examiner

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Dr. Rebecca MacDougall has been named the new Chief Medical Examiner for the Office of Medical Examiner and Trauma Services, taking over for Dr. Craig Mallak who retired in June 2021.

MacDougall previously served as the County's Associate Medical Examiner and the Director of Medical Education for the past decade. Throughout her 11-year career in forensic pathology, she has focused on her passion for mentoring and educating physicians as well as training emergency medical services students, medical students, nurses, attorneys and law enforcement officers in forensic pathology and medicolegal death investigation. She also serves as an active member of the Child Fatality Review Team, Opioid Fatality Review Team and Trauma Services.

I am committed to expanding our service to the community by developing additional outreach and educational opportunities," said MacDougall.

Compassion is the core of her work which drives her in being thorough, genuine and persistent in finding answers for families. 

 "Being available to the residents and visitors of Broward County during one of the most trying times of their lives remains the core of our mission. I am excited about the opportunity to lead the Office of the Medical Examiner and Trauma Services through the transition into our state-of-the-art facility.”

The County is fortunate to have a dedicated and experienced leader like Rebecca," said Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry. "I have the utmost confidence in her ability to serve the County in this pivotal role."

MacDougall earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Texas and earned her MD from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She also completed her four-year residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Lubbock, Texas. MacDougall is board certified in forensic and anatomic pathology.
