Director's Book Club Resumes in September and October

- Selection is "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" -

BROWARD COUNTY, FLThe popular Broward County Library book talk series “Director’s Book Club” will resume with Library Director Allison Grubbs discussing The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot online on September 29th and in-person on October 7th, 13th, and 21st.

Grubbs’ non-fiction selection is a compelling story of medical ethics, race relations and scientific breakthroughs which subsequently became a #1 New York Times bestseller and the subject of a film featuring Oprah Winfrey.

The book recounts the story of African American cancer patient Henrietta Lacks, whose cells were used beginning in the 1950s without consent or compensation for groundbreaking biological research for polio, cancer and space travel. Skloots describes how descendants of Lacks discovered that her cells were being bought and sold in labs around the world while she remained impoverished.

“This is a perfect title to reintroduce the Director’s Book Club,” says Grubbs. “It’s one of my all-time favorites, and well worth reading. It’s an eye-opener.”
