2020 Air Quality Numbers are In

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The County’s air quality for the 2020 calendar year was 79% in the Good range, 20% in the Moderate range, and 1% in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range.

Broward County maintains and operates a robust ambient air monitoring network. Real-time concentrations for all United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) criteria pollutants, other than lead, are collected by the Ambient Air Monitoring team of the Air Quality Program. Quality assured collected data is submitted to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and to the U.S. EPA for every hour of the year. Raw data is submitted to the U.S. EPA’s AirNow database to relay the area’s Air Quality Index (AQI).

Air quality data is assigned a value in the AQI to indicate how clean or polluted the air as it relates to human health. There are six levels of health concerns in the index. The index ranges from 0-500; values lower than 100 are considered satisfactory.

The County’s air quality rarely exceeds AQI values greater than 100 and is usually within the good range. However, we all can reduce our contribution to air pollution by greening our routine.

About the Air Quality Program:
The Section operates and maintains six air monitoring stations across the County. Real-time pollutant concentration data are measured at the stations. Additionally, several 24-hour daily samples are collected and analyzed for particulate matter, trace metals, ions, organic and elemental carbon, or volatile organic compounds. The real-time instruments use physical or chemical properties of a particular pollutant to measure continuous concentrations. The Ambient Air Monitoring team ensures that the equipment is producing legally defensible data by following U.S. EPA approved Florida statewide Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
