County Awarded $6.25 Million Grant

- Grant will fund development for more resilient infrastructure -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Governor Ron DeSantis has announced that $6.25 million has been awarded to Broward County through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s (DEO) Rebuild Florida Mitigation General Infrastructure Program. The program allows local governments to develop large-scale infrastructure projects to make communities more resilient to future disasters.

The funds provided to Broward County Water and Wastewater Services contribute to a $12.5 million project to construct an interconnect between the County’s reuse facility, located at the North Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the City of Pompano Beach’s OASIS Reuse Facility, creating the first steps to a regional reuse solution. The project will mitigate the risks associated with natural disasters. This includes hurricane events, droughts and saltwater intrusion due to repeated storm surges, king tides and sea-level rise by reducing the demand on the eastern Biscayne Aquifer wells used to produce potable (drinkable) water. Additionally, the project will reduce the treated wastewater being deep well injected and increase the use of treated wastewater for irrigation and industrial purposes. It will also ensure the continued use of investments in reuse infrastructure and provide additional storage capabilities for treated wastewater.

This regional solution benefits approximately 600,000 people served by 11 large users including the cities of Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, Deerfield Beach, Lauderhill, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach, Tamarac, and Coral Springs Improvement District, North Springs Improvement District and Parkland Utilities. “This project fosters the continuation of a long-term partnership between Broward County and its municipal partners,” said Mark Darmanin, Director, Water and Wastewater Operations Division.
