BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward County has proclaimed the month of April as ‘American Muslim Heritage Month,’ in celebration of the diversity and contributions of the American Muslim community.
On Tuesday, April 13th at 5PM, Broward Commissioner Dr. Barbara Sharief will present a proclamation at a special ceremony at the Islamic Foundation of South Florida, 5455 NW 108th Ave., in Sunrise.
The ceremony marks the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which begins in the evening on Monday, April 12th, 2021 and ends on Wednesday, May 12th, 2021.
Ramadan is a month of fasting, introspection, and prayer. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. It is a month of self-reflection and a way for Muslims to practice positive habits that will continue once Ramadan is over.
“Broward is a diverse county, with people of all religious beliefs and practices. The more understanding we have of a person’s religious faith, the more tolerant and respectful we become as a society. That’s why celebrating American Muslim Heritage Month is so important,” said Commissioner Dr. Sharief.
Five cities in Broward County have declared April as Muslim Heritage Month in celebration of the diversity of Broward County and the social, political, economic, and cultural contributions of American Muslims. The Muslim Federation of South Florida estimates there are more than 75,000 Muslims in Broward, including more than 25,000 Muslim students.
