County Announces Changes in Operations in Response to Eta

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County continues to monitor Tropical Storm Eta. Based on the current trajectory, the most severe impacts of the storm will be felt in Broward Sunday evening through early Monday morning.

At a 2PM news conference at the Emergency Operations Center, Mayor Dale V.C. Holness announced the following updates:

  • All non-emergency County Government business operations will close at 5PM today and will remain closed on Monday.

  • Broward County Public Schools will revert to 100% eLearning on Monday, November 9. District education and administration will be fully operational remotely, with physical school campus buildings and administrative sites closed. The district is in contact with FPL regarding potential outages that may impact distance learning during Tropical Storm Eta, and will continue to monitor the situation. For more information, visit Browardschools.com.

  • Broward County Transit and Paratransit will operate on a normal Sunday schedule, assuming no change in conditions; however operations will not resume until noon Monday, November 9. There will be no Express Bus Service on Monday.

  • Highway and bridge maintenance crews have been working to prepare County infrastructure and the South Florida Water Management District has been closely monitoring and managing canals. All bridges (FDOT- and County-operated) went into the “locked down” position at 2PM today.

  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and North Perry Airport are operating normally, but passengers are encouraged to call their airline to check for any flight cancellations.

  • The U.S. Coast Guard has placed Port Everglades at “Condition Zulu,” which means all waterfront activity has ceased. Petroleum trucks will continue to operate until 5PM today.

  • The COVID-19 test collection sites will remain closed until further notice. Sites are expected to begin reopening on Tuesday, November 10.

Broward County remains under a local state of emergency, a Tropical Storm Warning and Flood Watch. Portions of Broward County east of I-95 remain under a Hurricane Watch. Sustained winds of 74 miles per hour are possible.

The Emergency Operations Center is at a Level 2 activation and will operate on a 24-hour schedule until the event ends.

Eta is a large storm system that is expected to bring heavy rain bands and strong wind gusts. Localized flooding is likely and isolated tornados are possible. Residents are encouraged to participate in the Home Damage Assessment Program, to assist first responders in making Rapid Impact Assessments of damages in the community.

There have been no storm-related power outages thus far.

Rapid Impact Assessment results may result in the need for sheltering services.

Flood waters can be dangerous and can hide debris and fallen power lines. Please do not walk or drive into flooded areas.

The Broward County Hotline is taking calls at 3-1-1 or 954-831-4000.
