BROWARD COUNTY, FL- Broward Commissioners will discuss and vote on the creation of a Broward County Police and Criminal Justice Review Board on Tuesday, October 20th. The meeting will begin at 10AM and discussion of the Review Panel is set for a time certain at 10:40AM. Broward County Mayor Dale V.C. Holness proposed creating a Police and Criminal Justice Review Board after the death of George Perry Floyd, Jr.
The proposed Review Panel would gather data on police use of force and alleged misconduct, publish data and reports, identify issues that could be addressed through policy changes, and make recommendations.
Commissioners are considering a 24-member Police and Criminal Review Panel. As currently proposed, each of the nine Commissioners will nominate one member. Each of the following entities will also nominate one member: The president of the Broward County Bar Association, president of the Broward County Hispanic Bar Association, president of the T.J. Reddick Bar Association, president of the Caribbean Bar Association, one member from the Broward Public Defender, one nomination from the Broward State Attorney, a member of the Broward branch of the NAACP, one member nominated by a clergy organization or organizations representing a broad range of denominations and faith groups, one member nominated by New Florida Majority, one member nominated by Black Lives Matter; one member who is a Florida-licensed mental health professional, nominated by the chief executive officer of the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition, one member nominated by the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Greater Fort Lauderdale, Inc. and one member nominated by the Broward Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Commissioners will discuss if one member nominated by the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association and one member from the Broward Sheriff’s Office will be voting or non-voting members of the Review Panel.
Voting members of the Police and Criminal Justice Review Panel will attend specialized training arranged by the County, which will include (at a minimum) an overview of policing and the criminal justice system in Broward County, one ride-along with a local law enforcement agency and training that addresses racial inequity and implicit bias.
