- Free Exhibit at African American Research Library and Cultural Center -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Library presents a free exhibit, Imagine Puppets: African American Post-Slavery Storytellerswhich runs from March 4th through 30th, accompanied by a free workshop on March 20th, at the  African American Research Library & Cultural Center (AARLCC), 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311, 954-357-6282.

Theater in the form of puppetry is an often-overlooked aspect of African American culture which dates back to the 5th century BC. The exhibit displays puppets as important artifacts of the African American legacy.

The Imagine Puppets exhibit presents examples of African American puppetry post-slavery, demonstrating that beyond their aesthetic appeal, puppets are important tools to educate, engage and inspire audiences of all ages. The puppets in the exhibit are vehicles of traditional, heritage storytelling which blends African customs, beliefs and traditions.

In conjunction with the exhibit, from 3:30-5:30PM on Friday, March 20th, the library will offer a free workshop led by artist and puppet maker Anwar Floyd Pruitt to allow all ages to experience the craft of puppet making as an art form.

The exhibit and workshop is sponsored by the Miramar Cultural Trust, in collaboration with ArtServe.
