Library Presents Free "Cultural Conversations at the Center" Series

- Examining Maternal Resistance of Enslaved Jamaican Women -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The Broward County Library free program series, "Cultural Conversations at the Center," presents an evening of discussion with author Dr. Sasha Turner, from 6:30 to 8PM on Thursday, March 5th at the African American Research Library & Cultural Center (AARLCC), 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311, 954-357-6282.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Dr. Turner will discuss her award-winning book, Contested Bodies: Pregnancy, Childrearing, and Slavery in Jamaica, which examines the maternal health practices of enslaved Jamaican women. Dr. Turner reveals the little-known reproductive history of Black women in bondage, examining how they engaged in "maternal resistance" against their colonial oppressors.

The Cultural Conversations at the Center series takes place on the first Thursday of every month and features intellectually stimulating programs with thought and industry leaders, scholars, educators, filmmakers, artists and others whose work celebrates and illuminates aspects of Black history and culture.

AARLCC is committed to creating programs and experiences that will broaden minds and impact lives for the better. With the library as a cultural center and hub within the Black community in Ft. Lauderdale, the series provides a platform to discuss Black history and culture locally and nationally.

Sponsorship for the series is provided by the Friends of the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, Infinity Transportation and the Westside Gazette. For additional information on the upcoming series, contact Makiba Foster at mjfoster@broward.org or 954-357-6176. Registration on Eventbrite is requested.
