- Public discussions explore the values and differences that unite us -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - "Stand Up Speak Out: Community Conversations” on American core values explores the meaning of being an American through interactive, informative programs meeting on Tuesdays from 1 to 3PM on February 4th, 18th and March 17th at West Regional Library, 8601 W Broward Boulevard, Plantation, FL 33324, 954-765-1560.

The Community Conversation series is intended to increase awareness and understanding of democracies and what is required for their effectiveness and survival.

Participants can attend all three programs or the program of their choice; each program is stand-alone. The series opens on February 4th with the showing of American Creed, a PBS documentary on what America’s ideals and identity ought to be. The film interprets different kinds of American civic activism and models the exemplary, respectful dialogue that “Community Conversations” seeks to support in public libraries around the country. A discussion following the film will be led by Timothy Dixon, J.D., Associate Professor, Nova Southeastern University College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of History and Political Science.

Transform ideas into action on February 18th, when participants explore how they can empower themselves to be "we the people" and ensure that they have a role in civic engagement. Representatives from Hadassah Broward, Broward County Library Learning Services, and Friends of the West Regional Library will talk about volunteer opportunities.

A book discussion on March 17th of What Unites Us? Reflections on Patriotism by Dan Rather and Elliot Kirschner rounds out the series. In the book, the television journalist examines the institutions that elevate and sustain us, such as libraries, schools and parks, and the values that have transformed us, such as the civil rights struggle and the drive toward science and innovation. Read the book and come speak out about your conclusions as a citizen.

All sessions of this program are free and open to the public; preregistration on Eventbrite for each session is requested. For additional information, contact Mary Cassell at Mcassell@broward.org or 954-765-1577. Refreshments courtesy of the Friends of the West Regional Library.
