Census 2020: Counting College Students and Young Professionals

- Upcoming meeting to discuss ways to reach this population -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL: Ahead of the 2020 Census, the County’s Complete Count Hard-to-Enumerate Subcommittee is working hard to ensure all college students and young adults are counted. As a result, they will focus their October 23rd meeting on bringing together partners to discuss opportunities to ensure all of Broward’s young adults are counted in the 2020 Census. The meeting will be held at Broward College, A. Hugh Adams Central Campus, Building 17, Room 425, in Davie, starting at 3PM on Wednesday October 23, 2019.

The census counts every person in the country every 10 years, and young adults between the ages of 18 and 34 are a group that has been historically undercounted in the census. When our young adults aren’t counted, that means we have less funding to support programs like Pell Grants, Special Education Grants, and over 300 other federal programs. Plus, census data is used to determine our political representation, so an undercount means Florida might not be adequately represented in Congress.

If you are a student, young leader or part of an organization or group that is involved in serving or supporting college students and young adults (ages 18-34), join us on October 23rd. Your participation will ensure we increase awareness about the importance of completing the census, especially for our community’s young adults.

About Census 2020

Every ten years the U.S. Census Bureau counts residents across the country. An undercount in local communities can means millions in lost federal funding for important programs and services, and potentially impact representation in Congress. Broward County’s Complete Count Committee has six subcommittees tasked with reaching out to hard-to-enumerate groups to raise awareness of the April 1, 2020 census. Each subcommittee is chaired by a trusted voice in the community and a Broward County agency staff liaison. The Chairs of the Hard-to-Enumerate subcommittee are Health Foundation of South Florida and Meals on Wheels South Florida. The County agency liaison is Office of Economic and Small Business Development. The 2020 Census will be conducted online, and all responses are confidential.
