BROWARD COUNTY, FL – If you’re at a loss for what to do with your home landscape, Secret Woods Nature Center (2701 W State Rd. 84, Dania Beach 33312; 954-357-8884) has a month’s worth of answers in the upcoming Summer Home Landscape Series 2019. This annual series of free lectures is designed for homeowners who want to add to the beauty of their homes through creative and ecologically sound landscaping. The lectures, for ages 13 and up, will be held in the nature center’s air-conditioned Julia Hall on Thursdays in August, the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th, from 7 to 8:30PM.

These topics will be featured:

  • Aug. 1st – “Enjoyable Native Plants for You and & Wildlife,” with Richard Brownscombe, President of the Broward Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society
  • Aug. 8th – “Composting for the Backyard Gardener & Compost Tea,” with Broward County Master Gardener Vivian Landix, and “Learn How to Grow MicroGreens in One Week,” with Broward County Master Gardener Peggy DeMars
  • Aug. 15th – “Landscaping for Birds,” with Paddy Cunningham, a birding expert with Birding Adventures
  • Aug. 22nd – “Considerations for Improving the Wind Resistance of our Urban Forest,” with Michael Orfanedes, Extension Agent at the University of Florida’s Entomology Department
  • Aug. 29th – “Pollinators in the Garden,” with Aaron Mullins, Entomologist at the University of Florida

You can put what you’ve learned from the lectures to work in your own home landscaping by purchasing native and landscape plants from local nurseries. They’ll be at the nature center’s Go Native Plant Sale, from 9AM to 1PM on Saturday, August 31st.
