County Commission Approves Bus Service Improvements

- Improvements Funded by Transportation Referendum -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward County Transit (BCT) has been given the green light to implement bus service improvements to its fixed-routes, which will be funded by the transportation referendum, passed by voters last November.

The Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the proposed improvements at the June 11th public hearing held at the Broward County Governmental Center in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

BCT will roll out the improvements in two phases during the summer and fall of 2019. Service improvements include the addition of new routes, 147 new buses, expanded weekday and weekend services that extend into neighboring counties, shorter wait times, completing the installation of free Wi-Fi throughout BCT’s entire bus fleet, restoring routes suspended during the recession, and launching mobile ticketing.

“This is the just the start of BCT building the public transportation system that we committed to building for residents and visitors when we asked voters to support the transportation referendum” said Chris Walton, Director of Broward County Transportation. “Broward County residents will see numerous transportation improvements over the next few years and we are asking for the public’s involvement, by providing us with ideas to help make us better.”

Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr, who during his tenure as County Mayor led the campaign for the transportation referendum and is a strong supporter of public transportation, says the bus service improvements will greatly benefit our community. “These new routes are just one example of how the transportation referendum approved in November will have a serious impact on Broward County residents. The change constitutes a major step forward for transit in Broward, adding approximately 3,500 additional “service hours” every single week,” said Commissioner Beam Furr.
