BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Public Works' Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division (HBMD), in partnership with Florida Power & Light (FPL), will replace existing street lighting in the Boulevard Gardens Neighborhood of the Broward Municipal Services District (see attached map). This surtax-funded project will enhance illumination for sidewalks and roads, with FPL responsible for the construction and maintenance of the new lighting infrastructure. Currently, HBMD is undertaking sidewalk and curb ramp improvements, drainage repairs, and swale enhancements. The street lighting replacement is scheduled to begin Monday, June 23, 2025, and is expected to be completed by January 2026, barring any unforeseen conditions and/or weather delays. A subsequent phase of this project will include the removal of the existing wooden light poles.
The street lighting replacement will begin with the installation of new concrete light poles and LED luminaires within the County right-of-way, in adherence to Florida Department of Transportation and County lighting standards. Vehicular traffic detours will be implemented during off-peak hours, with a traffic officer present to minimize disruptions. Pedestrians will also be directed to use alternative sidewalks across from the work zone.
"Improved lighting in Boulevard Gardens makes the neighborhood safer for pedestrians and drivers as concrete poles can better withstand severe weather. These latest improvements compliment the work that has been completed to make this area more accessible for everyone in the community," said District 8 Commissioner Robert McKinzie, whose district includes the Boulevard Gardens neighborhood.
County staff coordinated this project closely with the Boulevard Gardens HOA and presented it to the community and members of the board.
