Portions of Broward Under Hurricane Watch for Tropical Storm Eta

- All of Broward remains under Tropical Storm Warning -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward County Emergency Management Division and emergency response partners continue to monitor Tropical Storm Eta as it approaches South Florida.

All of Broward County is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning and a Flood Watch, and coastal Broward (east of I-95) is under a Hurricane Watch. A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area, in this case within the next 24 hours. No storm surge is anticipated, and no evacuation has been ordered.

According to the National Weather Services’ 7AM Advisory, ETA has moved slightly to the south, but the large storm system is expected to bring heavy rain bands and strong wind gusts to Broward County, with the strongest impacts Sunday evening through early Monday morning as it passes over the Keys.

  • Rainfall will be significant with potential for localized flooding
  • Isolated tornados are possible
  • Beach erosion and dangerous rip currents are expected along the east coast

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will lock down bridges in Broward County eight hours before the anticipated arrival of tropical storm force winds (30 miles per hour or higher). The I-595 express lanes will stay in weekend position, with traffic flowing eastbound until Tuesday.

Broward County’s Port Everglades is under “Condition Zulu.” Per the U.S. Coast Guard, the port is closed to all incoming vessel traffic. Petroleum trucks continue to operation in and out of the Port. For more information, visit porteverglades.net.

Operations at Broward County’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and North Perry Airport are continuing as normal, but passengers are encouraged to check with their airline for any potential flight cancellations. For more information, visit fll.net.

Broward County Transit and Paratransit will operate on their normal weekend schedules, unless sustained tropical storm force winds force a suspension of service. For more information, visit Broward.org/bct.

To ensure the safety of members of the public and first responders, the COVID-19 test collection sites have been closed through Monday, November 9. Reopenings will be posted as known on Broward.org/coronavirus.

Any change in the speed or trajectory of the storm may affect the impacts of the storm experienced by Broward County residents.

Broward County Mayor Dale V.C. Holness will hold a news conference at 2PM on Sunday, November 8, at the Emergency Operations Center in Plantation. Members of the media are encouraged to participate virtually. The news conference will be broadcast and webcast live on normal venues. Visit https://vimeo.com/476731140.
