Broward County, FL - Broward County Transit (BCT) recently named retired Bus Operator, Kenneth Ross as its 2016 Transit Hero for his efforts to rescue an abandoned child last June. Ross has worked for BCT for 31.5 years, starting as a Coach Service Attendant in 1985, and retiring from County service earlier this month.

A native of Trinidad, Bus Operator Ross' heroic deed happened when he was nearing the end of his shift on bus route 88 and noticed a very young child attempting to cross three lanes on Pine Island Road in Plantation. He stopped his bus and asked a bystander if he was the child's parent. When the person said no, Ross asked for the child's hand and led him onto the bus with the goal of delivering the child to the nearest fire station. Plantation police officers eventually intervened and thanked him for his humanitarian effort. Ross says he became a bus driver because he enjoyed working with the public outside of an office environment, and is thankful to Broward County for being able to work a great job and support his family for the last three decades.

BCT's annual Transit Hero award recognizes someone who goes above and beyond in their duties and performs as a hero on behalf of BCT employees, customers and/or other members of the public. Ross was nominated by a supervisor after reviewing the incident report. There were four other nominees for the 2016 Transit Hero Award; all of whom are bus operators. They are: Cassandra Bailey (nominated for her exemplary work to assist customers during a bus breakdown); Willie Bryant (customer said his courtesy and professionalism makes him exceptional); Cassagnol Michel (nominated for his swift action in putting out a bus fire) and Elijah Moore (nominated for never missing a day of work in 30 years).
