BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Transit (BCT) successfully held its 36th Annual Bus Safety Roadeo on Sunday, February 26th, at its West Copans Road facility in Pompano Beach. The local Bus Safety Roadeo is an annual skills and safety competition for BCT bus operators who volunteer to compete in various challenges. It assesses behind-the-wheel skills designed to test every phase of operations that a bus operator encounters during normal driving situations.
This year, twelve eligible bus operators competed in front of over 100 attendees, including families, friends and customers who cheered and provided moral support to the competitors. The course contained obstacles that included the ability to negotiate left and right turns, passenger stops and judgment scenarios. Drivers earned or lost points based on safety habits, smoothness of the ride, appearance and even length of time on the course.
The winners of this year's local competition were BCT bus operators Rendol Whidden, First Place; Tommy Cannon, Second Place; Allen Lakes, Third Place; and Webert Mama, Rookie of the Year. Whidden scored 617 points out of a possible 650 points.
Mr. Whidden will represent Broward County Transit at the state competition at the Florida Public Transit Association/FDOT 2017 Triple Crown Bus Roadeo, hosted in Daytona Beach, Florida, April 28-29, 2017.
